DARE TO SOAR - FLYING WITH CONDORS

Melanie Schwier ©
With a wingspan of three meters, the Andean Condor is a master of flight who feels truly at home in rugged mountain terrain. Using thermal winds alone, the bird covers hundreds of kilometers a day and soars up to a height of nearly 5,000m above sea level. If a bird can fly this way, can a paraglider do the same? This is the question that longdistance paragliding champions Hernán Pitocco and Horacio Llorens seek to answer. If they want to successfully navigate their route along a steep canyon that cuts deep into the Andes, they will have to find a suitable coastal landform with strong upwinds. An emergency landing in the desert would be fatal but when Hernán and Horacio soar higher, a late realisation has disastrous consequences.
